THE CHOIR
'an unearthly uniformity of utterance, a discipline of dynamics and tone which seemed the closest thing imaginable to far off, heavenly song'
'an expertly planned and delightful concert, showing that this medium-sized choir is in excellent voice'
'refreshingly different'

The City of Oxford Choir is a medium sized chamber choir of 40 mixed voices drawn from all realms of life in the city and surrounding areas. Formed in 1977 to host a visiting choir from Leiden in the Netherlands, one of Oxford's twin cities, it has created a strong following and a unique place in the musical life of Oxford.
The choir registered as
a charity in October 2007, enabling it to make better use of its funds for
its aims and objects.
The choir performs mainly unaccompanied repertoire but also with
solo instrumentalists and small ensembles. The choir celebrated
its 30th year with a large concert in the Sheldonian Theatre in June
2007.
The choir's musical programming is varied and innovative, drawing on music from the Renaissance to the present day from around the world. Recent concerts have featured:
- French chansons by Debussy, Ravel, Saint-Saens, and Poulenc
- Portuguese Renaissance masterpieces by Duarte Lobo and Diogo Melgas
- a Lennox Berkeley Mass
- Christmas music from Baroque Germany and France
- Anthems for the Chapel Royal of Charles II - works by Henry Purcell and his contemporaries.
Our programmes often follow themes tracing musical traditions, setting composers in the context of the environment in which they lived and worked.
Our performances are often given in the intimate surroundings of a variety of college
chapels. The City of Oxford Choir has a special relationship with Oxford composers, a number of whom have written music especially for the choir.
The choir recently produced a CD 'O Sapientia' and visited Bruges to give two concerts. The choir has also visited and hosted choirs from Bonn, Munich and Grenoble.
