Fund-raising G&S sing-through
and dinner, January 2007 |
The City of Oxford Choir is a medium sized ensemble of 40 voices drawn from
all realms of life in the city and surrounding areas and a wide range of ages.
We are fortunate to have an excellent balance of voices including strong tenor
and bass sections.
We perform three concerts a year (December, March and July) and rehearse on Monday evenings, 7.30-9.30pm at Magdalen College School,
Iffley Road, Oxford. We regularly give concerts, The Queen's, Exeter, and Keble College chapels providing the opportunity to sing in architecturally and acoustically beautiful surroundings,
as well as the University Church of St. Mary the Virgin.
Social events (some of which also help raise funds for the choir) have included wine tasting evenings,
social sing-throughs and after concert parties. A delegation always goes
for refreshments after each rehearsal to a local pub and all are always welcome.
Annual membership costs £144 payable in three termly instalments if you wish however nobody should feel barred from the choir
on financial grounds alone and the chair or treasurer welcome approaches from those in
genuine financial hardship. Members rarely have to purchase their own music as it is usually obtained on loan,
the cost of which is included in membership.
The City of Oxford Choir is a well-balanced
choir: we do not suffer from the usual tenor shortages. At
this time we are particularly looking for first sopranos,
second altos and second basses, but we are always interested
in hearing from good singers in any part: if you'll be an
asset we'll try and find a space. If you are interested in joining the choir please
contact the Secretary (Diana Rayner) on 01386 446133 or email
. You will be invited to attend a rehearsal at
the beginning of term and to do a private audition during
the interval or at the end. The result is communicated in writing, also
privately.
